Dél-Dunántúl - Mecsekalja, Szekszárd, Tolna, Villány-Siklós,

(Souther Transdanubia)

This region embraces four wine growing areas in the hill country bordered by the Danube, the Drava and Lake Balaton, the Villány hills rising up from among them, and the southern slopes of the Mecsek. (The wine districts on the southern shore of Lake Balaton belong to the Balaton Region!). Both red and white wines are produced in South Transdanubia, but the emphasis is on red wines. At the beginning of the 20th century Kadarka and Kékoportó still formed the basis of the red wines, but in recent decades Kadarka has been replaced by Kékfrankos and the international varieties have gained ground: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. From the latter varieties, Bordeaux type cuvee wines matured in new oak casks are often produced. Of the white varieties, Olaszrízling, Hárslevelû, Rhine Riesling and Chardonnay are definitive.
